What is the role of an intercooler in a turbocharged engine?
An intercooler cools the compressed air from the turbocharger before it enters the engine’s intake manifold. Compressing air increases its temperature, and hot air is less dense, reducing the amount of oxygen available for combustion. By cooling the air, the intercooler increases its density, allowing more oxygen to enter the combustion chamber, which improves engine power and efficiency. Intercoolers also help reduce the risk of engine knocking, which can occur when the intake air is too hot.
