What is the difference between 4WD and AWD?
I’m considering buying a vehicle with either 4WD or AWD. What are the key differences between these systems, and which is better for various driving conditions?
What is the difference between 4WD and AWD?
4WD (Four-Wheel Drive) and AWD (All-Wheel Drive) systems both provide power to all four wheels, but they operate differently. 4WD systems, often found in trucks and off-road vehicles, can typically be manually engaged and are designed for challenging terrains. They offer high and low range settings, providing greater control in extreme conditions. AWD systems, common in many cars and SUVs, are always active and automatically distribute power to the wheels with the most traction. AWD enhances stability and handling on slippery or uneven roads but lacks the manual control and low range of 4WD systems.
