What is a flex-fuel vehicle, and how does it operate with different types of fuel?
I’m considering a flex-fuel vehicle. How do these vehicles operate with different fuel types, and what are the advantages of using ethanol blends?
What is a flex-fuel vehicle, and how does it operate with different types of fuel?
A flex-fuel vehicle (FFV) is designed to run on more than one type of fuel, typically gasoline and ethanol blends up to E85 (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline). These vehicles are equipped with sensors and a flexible fuel system that can adjust the engine’s operation based on the ethanol content in the fuel. The benefits of FFVs include the ability to use ethanol, which is a renewable resource and can reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Ethanol also burns cleaner than gasoline, reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, ethanol has a lower energy content than gasoline, which can slightly reduce fuel economy.
